How to get electricity connected for your customers – whether it be to a new house, new subdivision, industrial site or a new dairy shed.
You can also arrange for alterations to a power supply or relocation of existing lines.
Moving to an Existing Property
If your customer is moving to an existing property, they need to make contact an Electricity Retailer. They can stay with the current provider or choose a new one. Consumer NZ and The Electricity Authority offer online services to help consumers find the best power company and pricing plan.
Visit the Consumer Powerswitch or Billy to compare.
To find an Installation Control Point (ICP) number, visit the Electricity Authority’s Your Meter page.
Connecting a New Property or making an Alteration to an Existing Service
For new connections or alterations please see How to Get Connected.
New Supply requiring an Extension or Alteration to Westpower’s Network
If a new supply is going to require a new power line or transformer please refer to Network Extension.
Please follow the steps as outlined below.
Step One: Fill out an application: Complete a Customer Initiated Work Request for all new connections, alterations, and temporary connections.
- Include any relevant plans, sketches, drawings, maps, photos, load calculations, subdivision plans, or easements.
- Provide reasonable notice for the application to be reviewed.
Step Two: Obtain approval: Once the application is approved, Westpower will send a Network Connection Agreement.
- The agreement includes all relevant information and the Installation Control Point (ICP) number. The agreement is valid for a 6-month period, after which the application may need to be resubmitted.
- The agreement will need to be sent to the consumer to obtain ICP acceptance from their chosen Retailer.
- The Retailer must then contact Westpower directly to advise that they accept the ICP.
- Once relevant documentation has been received and final approval has been given, notification that the connection has been approved for energisation will be sent.
Step Three: Complete the Connection: Once electrical works are completed, contact Westpower with the date and time that you wish to energise the connection.
Although Westpower will, to its best endeavours, try to accommodate the requested time, the time of energisation may be different.
- Westpower’s Approved Contractor will confirm the date and time of energisation.
- A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) and Record of Inspection (ROI) will need to be presented to the Approved Contractor, prior to or at the time of energisation.
Some New Connections may require a Network Extension as part of the connection process. For more information about Network Extensions, please refer to Network Extensions.
Please note: Only Westpower Approved Contractors are authorised to access Westpower owned assets. This includes climbing poles and opening pillar boxes for inspections.
