Distributed generators, or ‘embedded generators’, are generators connected to the Westpower Network.
Distributed generators can be directly connected to the Westpower Network or located at a home or business which can generate electricity for that installation and is also be capable of feeding surplus generation back into the Westpower Network.
This type of generation can be made up of several systems that range in kilowatt (kW) capacity.
Before your generator can be connected to the Westpower Network, you must obtain permission from Westpower, have a signed contract with an electricity retailer and meet the requirements of the Electricity Industry Participation Code (the Code).
If you are a Consumer, you will need to engage a Distributed Generation Installer or Electrical Contractor.
For more information, you can download our Information Pack.
If you are an Electrical Contractor or Installer, please follow the steps below:
- Submit an Application: Obtain an Information Pack and submit the appropriate application form (under 10kW or over 10kW) and supporting documentation. Some of the information required may include:
- Inverter or battery specifications
- Compliance with AS/NZS 4777.2 2020 or later
- Panel specifications
Please email your application to connections@westpower.co.nz.
- Provisional Approval: Once Westpower is happy with the application and information provided, Provisional Approval will be granted.
An invoice will be sent from Westpower’s Finance Team to the installer.
*Westpower recommends arranging metering at this stage. This is to be organised with the customer's Retailer. - Make Payment: Payment is required to cover the cost of the application processing and witnessing of the anti-islanding functionality of the system. The application will not progress until payment has been received.
- Approval: Once we have received the payment, you will be sent an email which includes:
- All requirements before connection
- A copy of an Approval Letter.
(The Approval Letter will be posted directly to the customer) - Contact details for a Westpower Approved Contractor who will carry out anti-islanding protection witnessing.
- Witnessing: Once the Distributed Generation has been installed, you will need to contact Westpower’s Approved Contractor and arrange for the anti-islanding protection witnessing.
- You will need to ensure that the Certificate of Compliance and Record of Inspection are onsite, available for Westpower’s Contractor to view. Westpower require a copy of these documents as they are obligated to add them to the Electricity Registry.
Alternatively, you can email a copy of these through to connections@westpower.co.nz prior to the witnessing.
